Last month, I visited some friends who live quite far from me. I had not seen them since 2018 (Yes, that is quite a while). While hanging out, we were baking and watching a documentary on Dinos. While I do not remember much of what the narrator was saying, I remember something about a ‘rain that fell for eleven million years’ (the number, I concede, could have been another, I am not sure).
As soon as I heard that, the phrase ‘Imagine a million years’ sprung up in my brain. Since the dough had been smooth and the bread fluffy, I did try to imagine a million years. It was not pleasant. It was uncomfortable in same way as the first time, on a cold winter morning, I had a vision of the silence after death — in short, I had my first face-off with non-existence (which I found more terrifying than death … because … well death is … a singular event. Whereas what comes after it is … I dislike using the word infinite because it means whatever we cannot define… but well … you get the point (or you don’t, in which case I envy you (or, do I pity you?))
Since then I have been meaning to use ‘Imagine a million years’ as a prompt. And here it is finally, after a month of dilly-dallying (or is it fermentation?)
Why don’t you try the prompt ‘Imagine a million years’ and share what you come up with !
Imagine a million years.
Imagine a million things being for a million years.
Imagine before the big-bang.
Imagine feeling so guilty you have to commit crimes to justify.
Imagine the Dinos as majestic furry beasts.
Imagine being around for millionS of years and still NO PR.
Imagine the mind of someone you love:
inside the bone and meat –
the fears and fogs and valleys they get trapped in;
often, and for long.
Imagine that last heartbeat-pushed-weary-blood,
strolling the bylines of a corpse.
Imagine the second before the last breath –
that last breath is your entire life.
Imagine every second of life to come – that’s several millions of something.
Imagine a million seconds – that’s less than twelve days.
Now, imagine ONE second.
Can you?
Really?
